There is something timeless about opening old Panini sticker packs.
Whether you collected them as a child or are discovering them years later, every packet offers a surprise. You never know whether you'll uncover a future legend, a cult hero, or a player you've completely forgotten about.
For this challenge, I opened five sealed South Africa 2010 Panini World Cup sticker packets and attempted to build a complete starting XI using only the players I found.
No transfers. No substitutions. No outside additions.
The stickers would decide the team.
The Challenge Begins
Before revealing the final XI, here are the five sealed South Africa 2010 packets that started the challenge.
Twenty years on from the tournament, opening these packets feels like stepping back into one of football's most memorable World Cups. The sound of the wrapper, the anticipation of each reveal, and the possibility of uncovering a superstar all remain as exciting as ever.
Every Sticker Pulled
Across the five packets, 25 stickers were revealed.
Some names immediately stood out. Others required a quick reminder of where they played and how their careers unfolded. That's part of the fun of these Panini challenges. Every packet becomes a football history lesson.
The standout pulls included John Terry, Xabi Alonso, Marek Hamšík, Asamoah Gyan, Jesús Navas, José Bosingwa and Luísão.
There were also some interesting squad options, including Philippe Senderos, Jonathan Spector, Antonio Rukavina and Boubacar Barry, while a Uruguay badge and Brazil team sticker added some extra World Cup nostalgia to the haul.
Looking at the full collection, there was enough quality to build a balanced team, even if the packets didn't produce a Messi, Ronaldo or Iniesta.
Building the XI
After sorting through the stickers and trying a few different combinations, this was the final team.
Goalkeeper
Thomas Sørensen (Denmark)
A dependable goalkeeper with extensive Premier League experience. Sørensen spent many years performing at a high level for Sunderland, Aston Villa and Stoke City, making him a safe pair of hands between the posts.
Defence
RB – José Bosingwa (Portugal)
An energetic full-back who won multiple trophies with Chelsea. His pace and willingness to get forward make him a natural fit on the right side.
CB – John Terry (England)
The captain of the side. Terry brings leadership, organisation and strength in both penalty areas.
CB – Luísão (Brazil)
A commanding defender who enjoyed a hugely successful career with Benfica. Strong, composed and experienced.
LB – Joseph Yobo (Nigeria)
Naturally a centre-back, but versatile enough to fill the left-back role. Yobo's experience and defensive reliability earned him a place in the team.
Midfield
RM – Jesús Navas (Spain)
One of the quickest wingers of his generation. Navas offers width, pace and direct attacking threat.
CM – Xabi Alonso (Spain)
The star of the midfield.
Alonso's passing range, vision and ability to dictate the tempo make him the player every team would want to build around.
CM – Landry Nguemo (Cameroon)
The workhorse of the side. Nguemo provides energy, defensive cover and balance alongside Alonso.
AM – Marek Hamšík (Slovakia)
The creative force.
Hamšík was one of Europe's most exciting midfielders at the time and provides goals, flair and attacking quality from midfield.
Attack
ST – Peter Crouch (England)
Far more than just a target man. Crouch brought technical ability, intelligent movement and a knack for scoring important goals.
ST – Asamoah Gyan (Ghana)
One of the stars of South Africa 2010.
Gyan scored crucial goals during Ghana's historic run to the quarter-finals and remains one of Africa's greatest World Cup performers.
Rating the Team
Considering the players available, this XI has a surprisingly strong spine.
Sørensen in goal, Terry at the back, Alonso pulling the strings in midfield, and Gyan leading the line gives the team a solid foundation.
The attack lacks a true global superstar, but the balance across the pitch is impressive for a squad assembled entirely by chance.
That's what makes these challenges so enjoyable.
You are completely at the mercy of the packets.
Some collections produce dream teams.
Others produce chaos.
This one landed somewhere in the middle.
Final Verdict
South Africa 2010 delivered one of football's most memorable World Cups, and opening these stickers was a fantastic trip down memory lane.
From forgotten squad players to established international stars, every sticker brought back memories of a tournament that still feels unique more than a decade later.
